What helps you to feel calm in life?
I’m a huge fan of mindfulness meditation. When I wake up in the morning, my mind instantly goes to my to-do list and worrying about getting enough work done for the day. But then I sit at the edge of my living room couch. I focus my attention on my breath and relax any areas of tension in my body. I listen to the sounds of cars and birds outside my front window. By the end of the meditation, I’m much less in my head and much calmer and more grounded, with a sense of what really matters to me beyond the mundane tasks on my to-do list.
What are three "fun facts" about you?
#1 I once toured the country singing in an emo rock band.
#2 I own a bright pink-colored house that used to be called the “Flamingo House” before I bought it.
#3 I can cook Thai food just as good as the worst Thai restaurant in town.
What is one piece of advice that you would give someone who is struggling?
This is a biased and self-serving answer, but I tell them to go see a therapist! I also tell them to find their people. We’re social beings living in a society awash in stories about heroic individuals pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps. We need friends, family, and community to survive and thrive.
What’s your favorite quote or mantra you can’t live without?
A mantra that has really helped me, especially during the pandemic, is: “The grass is always greener where you water it.” It reminds me to stop looking to the next big challenge for fulfillment. It’s so easy for me to forget that the love, meaning, and connection I’m after is already here in every present moment.
